Education programs promote learning through being in their own local natural place.
Participants experience nature, by getting muddy, sandy and wet. Feeling a mud crab run across your hand, engages students so much more to an estuary, rather than reading about it in a book. Recording local fish species underwater makes the experience so much more authentic and real for young people.
Asking such questions as “How healthy is our stream or estuary?” or “Why is there so much rubbish on the beach?” generates ideas and thoughtful environmental protection and taking action.
Over time participants become connected to their own natural spaces and effective guardians, knowing their own environment from these experiences and the knowledge they gain.
